A Prairie Home Companion
Musical | English | 106 minutes
In Saint Paul, Minnesota, the long running radio variety show, A Prairie Home Companion is preparing its final broadcast. The radio station’s new owner is planning to demolish the theater. The show’s major participants reminisce about the past: the singing Johnson Girls, Yolanda and her sister Rhonda, the cowboy duo of Dusty and Lefty, and the show’s creator and host, Garrison Keillor. The parent company dispatches “The Axeman” to evaluate whether the show’s worth saving. He swiftly declares it’s too old-fashioned to keep on the air. The hope is to plan a national farewell tour.

My respect for Garrison Keiller is unbounded. The film is a loving evocation of collaborative, elusive, almost telepathic style of directing. A PRAIRIE HOME COMPANION is a lovely film about a lovely radio show
Altman’s casual chaos meets Keillor’s rhubarb-tinged nostalgia. A PRAIRIE HOME COMPANION is more likely to inspire fondness than awe. This is entirely appropriate since the movie snuggles deep into the mood and sensibility of its source, Garrison Keillor’s long-running public radio variety show
