Film lovers are enormously grateful that the hugely talented John Dahl got to make two  Neo-Noir films that  today are considered masterpieces of this genre. But, it didn’t come easy. When Red Rock West was completed it was dismissed by the film industry. It was dumped to cable stations without the usual first step, a theatrical run.  Bill Banning, the owner of an art house theater in San Francisco loved the film  and booked it for what he believed would be a short run. Film critics took notice and gave it rave reviews. The theater was packed nearly every performance. And, finally, the film received the acclaim and success it deserved.

A year later, Dahl followed  up with The Last Seduction.  This film was a smash from the beginning. 

And yet, there are still many ardent filmgoers who aren’t familiar with these two  “hidden gems.” Not to fret; you can now stream both:

Streaming is no longer a young person’s game. Findings from Nielsen’s latest audience report show that streaming minutes are up among all age groups—but the biggest growth has come among viewers 55 and older. Whether the jump in streaming among older viewers is a pandemic-related anomaly or spurred by Netflix and other high-profile streaming launches—Disney +, AppleTV+, Peacock, HBO Max—may be the big question.
