Info

Miami-born Carl Casper is the head chef of the high-end Gauloise Restaurant in Brentwood, California. After a dispute with Riva, the restaurant owner, about the kind of food to serve and a searingly bad review from Ramsey Michel, the local food critic, Carl is fired. Carl accepts an invitation from his ex-wife Inez, to join her and their 10-year-old son Percy, on a trip to Miami. Once in Miami, Carl rediscovers his love for Cuban food. Carl now is determined to refurbish a dilapidated truck he receives from Martin, Inez’s wealthy ex-husband, and convert it to a  truck serving Cuban specialties. Martin, one of the chefs at Gauloise, quits his job and flies to Miami to join Carl in his adventure. Carl, Martin and Percy spiff up the truck, install new equipment and buy ingredients. As they drive the truck from Miami to their homes in California, they are greeted by long lines of people craving their food. Ramsey Michel, who panned Carl and his cooking, is specialties.

CHEF is about the artist’s life. The fact that the artist in this case is a first-class cook makes his creation more accessible and visual than if he were, say, writing novels or composing music. But the main features and challenges of the artist’s existence are here: the strains on family, the temptations of security, the fear of critics and the need, every so often, to forget everything else and just fall in love with the work again.
Mick LaSalle

San Francisco Chronicle

CHEF is an homage to cooking and a love letter to food. The film is imbued with Latino culture in the way of people, food and music. With its easy-going pace, organic humor, and delicious scenes of food prep and cooking, CHEF is a pleasure to experience.
