Riggan Thomson is a has-been actor who enjoyed fleeting fame playing a film superhero named Birdman. Riggan is determined to make a comeback writing and directing a Broadway play starring his girlfriend Laura and Broadway newcomer, Lesley. Riggan’s daughter, Sam, a recovering drug addict, is hired as his assistant. When an accident knocks out the costar, Riggan hires the volatile, self-absorbed actor Mike Shiner. As Riggan begins to fall apart with the pressure, he visualizes Birdman trying to convince him to abandon the play and make another Birdman film.
