Info
Police Sergeant David Budd, a veteran of the war in Afghanistan, suffers from PTSD. One day while on a train bringing his kids home to his estranged wife, he confronts a female suicide bomber ready to set off her body explosives. David manages to cajole and disarm her. The reward for his bravery is an assignment to protect Britain’s Home Secretary, Julia Montague. Her hawkish stand about the war in Afghanistan and her unrelenting pursuit of terrorism, has resulted in severe criticism and threats against her life. David’s personal life is also a mess as his wife refuses to stay with him unless he goes for therapy. As David and Julia become intimate, David begins to suspect that Julia is involved in deeper and more dangerous relationships. It is at this point the series becomes a nerve-racking political thriller. The last segment resolves many, but not all, of the encounters that not only threaten the lives of the main characters but the existence of the entire nation.

“BODYGUARD” is the best political thriller since “HOMELAND.” It was a ratings sensation in the United Kingdom with its finale garnering higher ratings than any British broadcast short of the World Cup. Both juicy in its delving into character psychology and rippingly ready to tear up its playbook as it goes, it’s a six-episode ride that demands, and rewards, a quick binge. Madden’s performance, as the pure-hearted David Budd, tripping on his own empathy, and angrily operating beyond rationality, makes us believe anything is possible—a wonderful asset for a show that seeks above all else to keep us watching.
“BODYGUARD” is a rousing, complex thriller that defies expectations. It moves from character drama to paranoid thriller. David Budd’s stake in unraveling a conspiracy soon becomes personal, but he never evolves into an all-caps ACTION HERO. Even at his most badass, he operates on instinct, forever hovering right on the edge of an emotional breakdown. By the time the series inverts its opening sequence into a brilliantly mirrored climax, both David and the audience will have been put through the wringer. Madden delivers a magnetic, natural performance that both grounds David and makes him enormously sympathetic.
