Arturo is a coffee picker in Guatemala. He and his fellow pickers labor in the hot sun with little relief and low wages. Arturo urges the workers to form a union and negotiate with the owner for better working conditions and higher pay. They set a meeting place. However when a co-worker is bribed to betray them, government troops appear at the meeting and kill the workers, including Arturo. Arturo’s bereft son Enrique and daughter Rosa are determined to make the long and arduous journey to the United States (El Norte). They manage to make it to Los Angeles but they soon realize that working as illegal immigrants can be precarious.
