Dien Bien Phu was the cite of the final  battle in the First Indochina War. It took place between March 13th and May 7th, 1954. The  comabatants were the French Expeditionary Corps and the Viet Minh communist revolutionaries. By capturing  Dien Bien Phu, the French hoped to cut  Viet Minh’s supply lines into neigboring Laos. The Viet Minh, however, under brillliant General Giap, surrounded and besieged the French. In March 1954, the Viet Minh began. massive artillary bombardment of French positions and shortly afterwards the French garrison was overrun and the French surendered. Vietnam was divided at the17th parallel with the north given to the Viet Minh under Ho Chi Minh and the south becoming the State of  Vietnam. When Ho Ch Minh campained to unite the two parts of the country under a communist government, the U.S. stepped in to protect South Vietnam and the rest of Southeast Asia. And, so, another brutal, costly war began. The Vietnam War was America’s longest and most unpopular war. From 1968 and 1973, nearly 60,000 Americans were killed.
