Filmmakers for the Prosecution

Documentary | English | 52 minutes

Info

Shortly after World War II, preparations were proceeding rapidly in Nuremberg for the trial of the most heinous Nazi criminals. OSS film chief John Ford, was determined to show at the trial, in film, the atrocities committed. He  convinced two major Hollywood filmmakers, and brothers, Budd and Stuart Schulberg to dig up all the footage they could find showing these horrific acts. The siblings were also on a nerve-racking deadline: the films had to be found and edited  before the trial began. Many historians have attributed the successful convictions of the Nazi leaders to the films the Schulberg brothers were able to produce at the trial. The documentary was adapted from the monograph by Sandra Schulberg (Stuart’s daughter).

Arriving at a moment when images of atrocities have become a matter of everyday institutional record and public consumption,  FILMMMAKER FOR THE PROSECUTION laments the barbarism we see in these images – and implicitly asks what it would take for them to shock and shame us anew.
