Brady, his autistic sister, Lilly, and their father live in poverty on the Pine Ridge Reservation, home to the Lakota Sioux. Brady, once a rodeo star, suffered brain damage from an accident and can never compete again. Brady’s father.Wayne, is incapable of caring for the family, spending the little money they have on  gambling and drinking. Brady takes a job as a store clerk to help support his family and  buy a horse. Brady’s constant riding and refusal to rest sufficiently causes him to have a seizure. The doctor  informs Brady he should never ride again. The next seizure could be fatal. Upon returning home, Brady is informed  his horse broke a leg trying to jump a fence. He has to be shot. Bereft,  Brady decides to enter  rodeo competition despite the doctor’s warnings. At the rodeo, when it’s Brady’s turn to ride the bronco, he becomes emotional seeing his father and Lilly watching him. Is what he’s doing worth it?

The best American movie this critic has seen in the past year. Chloé Zhao’s THE RIDER is the kind of rare work that seems to attain greatness through an almost alchemical fusion of nominal opposites. The film’s style, its sense of light and landscape and mood, give it the mesmerizing force of the most confident cinematic poetry.
Godfrey Cheshire

Ms. Zhao knows how to take care and when to take risks. She has an eye for landscape and an acute sensitivity to the nuances of storytelling, a bold, exacting vision that makes THE RIDER exceptional among recent American regional-realist films.
