The Shining

Horror | In English | 144 minutes | 1980

Directed by Stanley Kubrick from  Stephen King’s best-selling novel, this suspenseful and troubling film examines a family becoming unhinged. Writer Jack Torrance, his wife Shelley, and young son Danny, accept a job as caretakers at a snowbound isolated hotel  in the Colorado Rockies.  Jack hears that the previous caretaker developed a fever and killed his wife and two daughter. This doesn’t faze Jack as he’s planning to do a lot of writing in this place. Danny is telepathic (also referred to as having a “shining”) and warns that ominous things are going to happen.   Indeed,  strange things do happen and Jack’s mental condition deteriorates. His demons are activated and he becomes totally unhinged. As Danny and Wendy fear for their lives, they manage to escape. Jack is left behind to meet his fate.
Jack Nicholson (Jack Torrance) / Shelley Duvall (Wendy Torrance) / Danny Lloyd (Danny Torrance)

Cold and frightening. The movie is not about ghosts but about madness and the energies it sets loose in an isolated situation primed to magnify them.
Roger Ebert

The film’s long takes, meticulous framing, shrewd art direction, eerie naturalism, and merciful patience are exotic by the horror movie’s current attention-defecit disorder.
Wesley Morris

Boston Globe
