In the Heights

Musical | English | 143 minutes | Words and music by Lin-Manuel Miranda

This is a marvelous film adaptation of the hit Broadway musical, In the Heights. Film critic Monica Castillo offers the following synopsis: “IN THE HEIGHTS represents many things for many different viewers. It can be a story about ambitious, hard-working people chasing their dreams. It can be a reflection on the immigrant experience and the struggle to find where you belong. It can also be a tribute to our parents’ sacrifices.” Thrillingly filmed on location in the Washington Heights section of Manhattan heavily populated with immigrants from the Caribbean.

It’s here! Jubilant, unapologetically massive, and bursting with a cozy, melancholic sense of communal  belonging. It’s simply an overwhelming experience.

Lin-Manuel Miranda’s musical, IN THE HEIGHTS, comes to the screen as an exuberant and heartfelt party. It’s a piece of mainstream American entertainment in the best sense – an assertion of impatience and faith, a celebration of communal ties and individual gumption, a testimony to the power of art to turn struggles into the stuff of dreams.
